Articulated Dump Truck The articulated dumper is a construction machine used to transport large amounts of soil, rocks and raw materials over short to medium distances in mines and quarries. It is also used on construction sites for earthmoving activities.
An articulated dumper consists of a tractor, a tipper and a common frame; the articulation between the tractor and the bucket is ensured by a hydraulic system. Lighter and more manoeuvrable than the rigid dumper, the articulated dumper is however less powerful. Articulated dumpers typically have six-wheel drive, and can carry up to 40 tonnes. The bucket is filled by loaders or excavators.
The first articulated hauler, called Gravel Charlie, was developed by Volvo in 1966.
