A 100-ton mining excavator: Liebherr R 9100!
The pre-series model of the R 9100 Generation 8 (G8) has successfully passed its final validation test in Indonesia. Liebherr is therefore launching the commercialization of its new 100-ton class mining excavator, designed to replace the R 9100 Generation 6 (G6).
One year of testing in an Indonesian mine
To validate its developments, Liebherr partnered with the Indonesian company PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara to deploy the R 9100 G8 at the Tanjung Enim mine in southern Sumatra (Indonesia). Put to the test under demanding conditions, the excavator was used for loading and unloading 100-ton haul trucks involved in overburden removal.
The test began in September 2024 and ended in December of the following year. Over this significant period, the R 9100 G8 achieved an average monthly operating time of over 411 hours with 92% availability. Further studies also highlighted low fuel consumption. Compared to the G6, the new model is 20% more fuel-efficient while delivering a 30% improvement in energy performance.
What innovations for Generation 8?
The R 9100 G8 is equipped with the D9512 engine in FCO configuration, already used in previous models including the G6. From this generation, it also retains the pressurized and FOPS-certified cab and offers similar bucket sizes. The model also features numerous innovations, starting with new electro-hydraulic controls and the latest evolution of the hydraulic system. The former improve smoothness and precision of operation, while the latter reduces cycle times.
