SGC-170: a new Sarens crane among the most powerful in the world
Belgian multinational Sarens is adding a new machine to its range of large cranes. The specialist in heavy lifting, technical transport, and rental has unveiled its electric crane model, the SGC-170.
A precise and powerful crane
The SGC-170 offers a load capacity of 170,000 T/m and a lifting capacity of over 3,200 t. Such performance is not far from that of the SGC-250, nicknamed “Big Carl,” which held the record as the world’s largest land-based crane for six years. This enables it to successfully operate in large-scale projects, such as petrochemical installations and nuclear sites.
The machine is also equipped with a jib on its boom. Efficient and precise, it allows the movement of a 1,300-ton load over a distance of more than 200 meters. Thanks to an innovative structure made of massive components, it is also easy to transport and assemble. As a result, the crane will be operational four to six weeks after arriving on-site.
The advantages of an electric model
Like the SGC-90, the SGC-170 is an electric model. This technical choice, avoiding hydraulic pumps, filters, and diesel engines, greatly reduces the frequency of maintenance interventions without affecting productivity.
To minimize consumption, the machine also features a system capable of generating electricity with every boom movement and during load lowering. If not needed for the crane, the generated energy can be fed back into the grid.
