Sheep-Foot Compactor The sheep-foot compactor, also called a tamper or "tamping" compactor, is a self-propelled road roller equipped with one or more notched cylinders.
Tamping compactors are mainly used for the compaction of backfill and heterogeneous and clayey soils. They are sometimes equipped with a bull blade up front. A sheep's foot compactor can be single or tandem, static or vibrating.
The name "sheep's feet" comes from the fact that in the past, herds of sheep were used to compact certain surfaces (dikes, airfields): the tamper-foot compactor reproduces the work that was carried out by the animals.
