Revolution in the construction equipment world : autonomous machines guided by drones !
The news came this week : Komatsu tests a new concept in Japan. In order to overcome the important shortage of qualified construction operators in this country, Komatsu imagined autonomous machines, able to level without drivers with the help of drones.
Already used for several cartography works, drones is becoming a important asset in the construction world. It gives a 3D projection of the site's state and is already often used on construction sites.

Komatsu goes further with the use of drones. Its project called « Smart Construction » in partnership with Skycatch (specialised in drone manufacture) may seem crazy, but it helps reduce the margin of error and save time on construction sites.
The manufacturer offers Komatsu excavators and bulldozers, without drivers , for levelling operations. These machines move with the help of drones that replaces surveyors on the ground. The drone creates a 3D pattern of the parcel to level and transfer the information directly to the machine.
An operator watches the operations from a screen at a distance. He can adapt and change the machine's actions at any moment.
Is the construction field threatened?
Such a project poses the question of the machine driver's jobs on construction sites. If, man is replaced by drones and autonomous machines, what will happen to workers ?
In fact, the solution offered by Komatsu should bot, in theory, impact us. It has been developped only for Japan. Its high shortage of qualified workers in the construction industry is a real problem, and the country is set to welcome the summer Olympic games in 2020. There is a shortage of nearly 25 000 workers for the manufacturing of the infrastructures and Komatsu wants to showcase this solution on this occasion.
