Vinci builds « smart » motorway in England
With Balfour Beatty, the French construction group just won a 65-million euros contract for the construction of a "smart" motorway" near Birmingham.
In a report from July 22nd 2015, Vinci announced that Highways England assigned the transformation of 18km of the M5 motorway, near Birmingham, into a "smart" motorway. This 65-million euros contract was assigned to company owned by Vinci at 40%, through their branches Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Taylor Woodrow, and at 60% by Balfour Beatty.
Sensors and a dynamic display to improve traffic
Fitting in the Smart Motorway Programme (SMP) by Highways England, this project includes the transformation of the sections of the 4A and 6 of the M5 from 3 to 4 lanes, with the smart use of the emergency lane. Sensors will be installed along the road in order to deliver in real-time to a control center the information regarding traffic density. These information will allow an operator to adjust the vehicle speed limit through a dynamic display.
Two other similar projects in the next 5 years
In 2010, the French construction group already enlarged the 25 and 28 slip roads of the M3. If this new Vinci construction helps improve traffic, the signed contract with Highways England also plans two other similar projects in the next five years, between the junctions 3 and 12 of the M4 from 2016-2017, and between the junctions 2 and 4 of the M6 from 2017-2018. The amount of these road works is valued at 803 millions euros.
