The latest models of hybrid excavators from Komatsu, Hitachi and Caterpillar

Fuel consumption reduction is an important preoccupation for construction equipment manufacturer. The Komatsu HB215LC-2, Hitachi ZH210LC-5B and Caterpillar 336F XE hybrid excavators meet the requirements of these new norms.

The hybrid excavator's system is motor-generator of electric rotation, which replaces the hydraulic engine of the turret rotation. This captures the kinetic energy each time the turret slows down, and converts it into electrical energy.  The regenerated energy is stored in a supercap and then helps the engine during the following accelerations. Lots of construction equipment manufacturers are interested in this technology, such as Case, which unveiled a new prototype in April 2015 during Intermat. Others are already a step ahead, such as Komatsu, Hitachi and Caterpillar.

 

The Komatsu HB215LC-2 hybrid excavator

The first hydrid excavator in the world, the PC 200 Hybrid, was introduced by Komatsu in 2008. The Japanese manufacturer, then unveiiled the HB215LC-1 hybrid excavator during Conexpo in Las Vegas in March 2011. This excavator sold over 2.500 units in the world.

The following model, the HB215LC-2, was launched in April 2014. It uses up to 30% less fuel than a conventional excavator.

With very low noise levels, this Komatsu hybrid excavator is ideal for construction sites in urban areas, at night or in confined spaces.

The Hitachi ZH210LC-5B hybrid excavator

Launched in April 2014 in Europe, the Hitachi ZH210LC-5B hybrid excavator helps reduce operating costs and noticeably increases productivity compared to the other models of the Zaxis-5 range.

The Trias HX energy-efficient hydraulic system reduces the fuel consumption by 31% compared to a classic model while offering the same power, efficiency and manoeuvrability.

This model also has an electric power assist system that comes into force for small swing operations. It uses energy from electric swing motors to carry out such movements, further reducing the machine’s fuel consumption.

 

The Caterpillar 336F XE hybrid excavator

Following the 336E H hybrid excavator in June 2013, the new Caterpillar 336F XE hybrid excavator was launched by the American manufacturer in March 2015. It uses up to 20% less fuel than the classic 336F, and up to 25% less than the standard 336E standard model, without reduced performances or more maintenance costs.

This model is based on the ESP technologies, ACS (Adaptative Control System) and SER (Swing Energy Recovery). The ESP system adapts the engine performances to the load being carried. The ACS technology manages the hydraulic flow in order to homogenise the machine's moves.

Finally, the SER system captures the kinetic energy during swing deceleration by storing normally wasted hydraulic flow from the swing motor in high-pressure accumulators.
