Worker killed by falling forklift load

An inquiry is under way into the death of a 60-year-old worker who died in Laverton last month after being hit by a falling forklift load.

WorkSafe believes the man was guiding a forklift driver who was removing computer equipment, weighing some 200kg and standing about 2m high, from the back of a semi-trailer. The equipment was on castors and not mounted on a pallet.

Forklifts are among the state's most dangerous machines, accounting for 57 deaths since 1985. Sixteen of those deaths involved loads falling from the forklift.

To reinforce material already conveyed to industry about the dangers of working with forklifts, WorkSafe recently released posters warning of the dangers of working near the machines.
