Big expectations for Hitachi mini excavators
Created 12/16/2009, 08:46:27 am
The Japanese manufacturer has been at the forefront of the mini excavator market for two decades, and so the launch of the Hitachi ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 reinforces its commitment to this important sector of the construction industry.Hitachi engineers have
interpreted feedback from existing customers in conjunction with their
extensive technical expertise to develop the new Zaxis models. The ZX16-3 and
ZX18-3 are available with a cab or canopy, and are designed for light
applications in confined spaces, such as utilities, gardening/landscaping and
general purpose groundworks. They also provide better performance, ultimate
comfort and safety, and benefit from reduced running costs.
HCME Assistant Manager
Utility Products Joep van den Maagdenberg comments: “Every Hitachi mini
excavator has been designed with durability, ease of maintenance and operator
comfort in mind. The ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 are no exception. These new Zaxis models
have already been tested extensively on a wide range of job sites. We are
therefore confident that the enhanced performance of these machines will be
well received by new and existing Hitachi owners, as well as rental customers.”
Better performance
The Hitachi ZX16-3 and
ZX18-3 are equipped with powerful and economical three-cylinder 10.7kW engines,
which provide a significant increase in performance. Their superior
power-to-weight ratios allow rapid acceleration and smooth operation in
comparison with the previous models (ZX16 and ZX18).
The new Zaxis minis also
have improved overall front speed and more precise handling capabilities, as
well as an 18 per cent increase in digging force over their predecessors. The
ZX18-3 has a more durable blade and an adjustable foot crawler for enhanced
stability.
With operating weights of
just 1,600kg and 1,770kg respectively, the ZX16-3 and ZX18-3’s lightweight
characteristics enable them to be easily transported by trailer, driven under a
standard EU driving license. This makes the machines ideal for transportation
along narrow roads and helps to reduce logistical costs.
Ultimate comfort and
safety
The Hitachi ZX16-3 and
ZX18-3 have been designed with comfort and safety in mind. The wide opening
door allows the operator to enter the spacious cab with ease. The canopy
variants have a convenient walk-through design, which allows easy access to the
controls from either side of the machine.
The fully adjustable fabric
seat equipped with suspension absorbs vibrations during operation to reduce
operator fatigue. In addition, the internal controls have been ergonomically
designed and the speed selection switch has been placed on top of the blade
lever grip for added comfort and convenience.
All ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 mini
excavators can be fitted with an optional theft deterrent system, which requires
the entry of a code to prevent illegal operation or vandalism. Other key
features include the neutral engine start system and shut-off lever, which
prevent accidental movements, and the single pin in the vertical swing post to
minimise jerking.
Reduced running costs
Reduced running costs for
the Hitachi ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 may be attributed to the use of highly durable
components. The machines’ D-shaped frame provides additional reinforcement and
helps to prevent damage caused by obstacles. The boom is reinforced with a
strong, ribbed cylinder cover, which provides higher impact resistance. The
counterweight also extends over both sides of the machine for further
protection.
A new tread pattern has
been applied to the rubber shoe for added durability. The short-pitch rubber
crawler is also excellent in reducing vibration caused when traveling and its
structure has been improved for stability.
With the engine cover open,
parts such as the fuel and oil filters are easily accessible for quick
servicing and inspection, therefore reducing operator downtime and maintenance
costs. Side steel covers are easily detachable and repairable.
The easy-to-replace
dustproof net also prevents foreign matter from entering the radiator and oil
cooler, and causing damage to the machines’ internal components – avoiding
unnecessary downtime. In addition, the ZX16-3 and ZX18-3 both benefit from a
large 22-litre capacity fuel tank, which helps to increase productivity by
working continuously without interruption.
